This month, National Nurses Week extends from May 6 to May 12, ending on what would’ve been Florence Nightingale’s 199th birthday. President Nixon declared the first International Nurse Day back in 1974 and the American Nurses Association finalized the dates in 1993 for a permanent week that celebrates the nursing profession and the positive impact nurses have on people’s lives.
Of course Florence Nightingale, who was born on May 12, 1820, was the legendary figure who launched what we know of today as modern nursing. She transformed care for soldiers during the Crimean War, dramatically reducing deaths related to illnesses and unsanitary conditions. She went on to help fund St. Thomas’ Hospital in London, including the Nightingale Training School for Nurses. She devoted her life to compassionate care for the poor and sick.
For the 4 million registered nurses in the U.S. who are devoting themselves to compassionate care, National Nurses Week can come with some rewards in the form of fun deals and freebies.
