This week is National Nurse Practitioner Week. It celebrates NPs, and it serves to remind lawmakers of the importance of allowing NPs to practice to the full extent of their experience and education. You can download a resource guide from the AANP (American Association of Nurse Practitioners) to help your celebration.

And in case you didn’t know, the election was called. President-elect Joe Biden is starting the transition by announcing his coronavirus task force today as his first point of business.

MORNING BRIEF

Biden to announce his Covid-19 task force

Today, look for President-Elect Joe Biden to announce his administration’s coronavirus task force. This group will serve as transition advisors to create the action plan that will start on January 20, 2021.

STAT reports that the task force is effectively an extension of the group of advisers who have briefed Biden and Kamala Harris on Covid-19 for months. The group includes:

  • David Kessler, the former Food and Drug Administration commissioner;
  • Vivek Murthy, the former surgeon general; and
  • Marcella Nunez-Smith, the Yale physician-researcher who focuses on health disparities.

The task force would likely feature “sub-task forces in each area” of pandemic response, including testing, contact tracing, and vaccines. Watch this space.

Don’t let PPE get in the way of compassionate nursing

Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, touch and nonverbal communication has been hindered by the wearing of PPE. According to a report in Nursing Times, Covid-19 will affect compassionate nursing care by changing therapeutic touch, patient perception of compassion, and levels of nurses’ compassion satisfaction. The authors of the paper stress the importance of employing alternative ways of demonstrating compassion. Try these six ways to practice compassion while wearing PPE.

If you or someone you know is looking for work…

Consider checking the job boards at Mayo Clinic and Banner Health. Both are seeking to hire thousands of healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Specifically, Mayo Clinic has more than 500 openings in Arizona and more than 4,000 for the entire Mayo Clinic enterprise. Nursing is the greatest hiring need there. And, Banner Health confirmed to Becker’s that the health system has 2,170 job openings in Arizona, Colorado, Nebraska, Nevada, Wyoming, and California.

For when you don’t have the mental energy to cook

Sometimes the idea of cooking seems too tedious after a long shift. For those times, always keep at least one of these 12 top-notch frozen pizzas (plus, our own recommendation: 365 by Whole Foods Thin Crust Four Cheese pizza) in your freezer.
