Average APP Salary Has Increased Since 2017 — But Still Not as High as in 2016

Unlike that of physicians, the average annual income for advanced practice providers has wavered from year to year, according to a recent report from LocumTenens.com. The data comes from both APPs with permanent positions and those who work temporary jobs, and it takes into account bonuses.

In 2018, the average salary for APPs was $122,973. This is compared to $121,620 in 2017 and $125,688 in 2016. On the other hand, physicians salaries steadily increased from $312,341 in 2016 to $324,090 in 2017 and $363,924 in 2018. According to LocumTenens.com, MDs have seen an increase of 16.5 percent since 2015.

Salary by Speciality

The report also gathered salary information based on specialty and profession. It found that the highest paid APPs are certified nurse anesthetists, who make an average of $202,244 a year. Next up were emergency department PAs, who brought home $166,194 annually. Coming third behind were ED NPs, who made $142,857.

Coming in fourth were psychiatric NPs, who make an average of $137,993 a year. Next was critical care NPs with an average salary of $134,850, then hospitalist NPs with $128,532 and primary care NPs with $118,034. The least profitable position, according to this research, was primary care PAs, who earned an average $115,934 in 2018.

That primary care APPs made the least is consistent with other salary data. Majority of these providers work in clinic or community centers, followed by hospitals and group practices.

APPs’ Job Satisfaction

The LocumTenens.com report also touched on job satisfaction by asking respondents if they planned to change jobs and when. It found that 38 percent of respondents (including physicians and APPs) were considering changing their job within the next year — while 42 percent said they had no plans. Overall, critical care NPs had the lowest urge to switch jobs, with 60 percent saying they had no plans to, followed by:

  • CRNAs (46 percent)
  • Primary care PAs (45 percent)
  • Emergency medicine NPs (39 percent)
  • Emergency medicine PAs (39 percent)
  • Primary care NP (35 percent)
  • Psychiatric NP (32 percent)
  • Hospitalist NP (25 percent)

The respondents came from a variety of backgrounds (though most were employees), lived across the country and worked in several practice environments. That said, it’s unclear whether this data is nationally representative.
